2010 Elections: Democrat Fears and Redistricting

Nov8

The AP is reporting on Democrat fears and Republican hopes in regard to next years elections citing “Fear about the economy and anger at incumbents are coursing through the country” as primary motivators for Democrats to be nervous and play defense in the mid-terms.

Nervous Democrats are on defense and emboldened Republicans sense opportunity heading into 2010 and the midterm elections. It was just three years ago that the GOP lost the House and Senate as well as governors’ races in a cross-country Democratic wave.

Now, with most states under their control and comfortable majorities in Congress, Democrats must protect far more seats than Republicans: 19 governors’ mansions, 17 Senate seats and as many as 60 House districts in moderate-to-conservative regions and swing-voting areas.

At this point, Democrats must do it in a more difficult political environment than in 2006 and 2008.

With a bad economy and the White House hell bent on Big Government taking over practically every sector of our lives, not to mention saddling our kids and grand-kids with enormous debt, Democrats have an added hurdle to overcome in the way the redistricting in some key states have made Republican candidates more viable.

According to a “Polling News and Notes” document released by Karl Rove&Co.(pdf) 2010 through the next decade may present real problems for Democrats.

President Obama Banking on Dodd

Nov7

Tonight president Barack Obama will appear at a $1,000-per person fundraising event for Senator Dodd in Stamford, Connecticut.

Embattled Senate Banking Committee Chairman Christopher Dodd (D-Ct.), whose low approval ratings make him one of the most vulnerable Democrats seeking re-election next year, gets help from President Obama tonight.

Obama will appear at a $1,000-per person fundraising event for Dodd in Stamford.

Dodd is crucial to Obama’s hopes for getting the overhaul of the regulation of financial services passed. The House Financial Services Committee is currently marking up the measure. Yesterday it approved the component that would create a Consumer Financial Protection Agency.

Senator Dodd is one of the most vulnerable Senators running for re-election next year, with low poll numbers resulting from his involvement in the Housing & Banking collapse to getting favorable treatment from mortgage giant Countrywide under the friends of angelo program Dodd is in a for a huge uphill climb.

“Sen. Dodd’s botched oversight of the Banking and Housing Committee, influenced by millions of dollars in lobbyist and financial services industry campaign donations, led to the greatest economic calamity of our lifetime,” former Rep. Rob Simmons (R-Conn.) said Wednesday.

Jim Cooper missed the memo

Nov7

When I reflect back on Mark Kirk of Illinois and his vote for Cap & Trade, the part that upsets me the most is that he admits it probably wasn’t a good vote for America and its core foundation. He admits he probably shouldn’t have voted for it, and he admits the bill had flaws.

Congressman Mark Kirk is in a position of leadership. He has significant responsibility as a Congressman and his Oath to the Constitution does not suggest he should vote for dangerous, flawed bills that damage the fabric of America. At least not in my opinion.

Which leads me to “wonder what on earth these guys in Congress are thinking?”

Politico points out that Moderate Democrat, Jim Cooper just released a statement showing his support for the bill.

I will vote yes on H.R. 3962. My vote is not an endorsement of all the provisions of the bill because I find much of the bill to be deeply flawed. There is little chance that H.R. 3962 will become law due to the long legislative process. My reason for voting yes is to advance the cause of health care reform by forcing the Senate to act. Without passage of this House bill, the Senate could delay reform indefinitely. That would be the worst possible outcome because our current health-care system is not sustainable. Congress needs to pass good health legislation in the next few months for the good of the country.

How can any Congressman vote for a Bill that he finds to be “deeply flawed?” Is this keeping in sync with the Oath to uphold the Constitution and legislate in ways that protect the rights of Americans?

And finally… did Jim Cooper miss that fact that the majority of Americans do not support the current legislation as it is written?

Progressives Defend Each Other

Nov1

As Scozzafava bows out and leaves Hoffman and Owens in the race its becoming more apparent that Progressives, whether they are Blue or Red are more and more worried.  Over the next few days we will see them begin the tired rhetoric of trying to attach Hoffman to bias, dirty tricks, and a group of upstart outsiders that just flew right in to New York’s 23rd District.  Of course the natural thing would be to defend Hoffman.  Perhaps mention how even Progressives have done the same thing?  Yet that would just fuel the beast and serve no purpose other then to point fingers.  So let’s just call a spade a spade and all understand that the tactics being utilized are those mined by the Progressives during Obama’s Presidential run.  For the most part they are not wrong.  Utilizing the Internet and getting citizens engaged is at the very much the foundation of our politics.  How is this wrong?  We should not allow our process to be dominated by an oligarchical structure that relies more on money and prominence of a corporate political machine then on citizens.  Consider this.  Why is it relevant that other citizens come to a district to help a candidate?  In the first, as I have mentioned,  Progressives take a national and even a world view then its time conservatives and liberty minded folks do as well.  Fair is fair after all.  In the second, even though “strangers” come to a district to help out this does not mean the citizens of that district are coerced into voting another way or that these outsiders are voting at all.

Yet let us not overlook something.  Even as Progressives attempt to isolate Hoffman and his widely popular conservative views, they are pointing out the fact that Progressives are not the majority they claim they are and perhaps not in the right after all.  Since assuming the majority they have assumed a moral right to what they think is correct. This has been a foundation of Pelosi and her ilk’s presumed authority.  Why else would they and Obama cut any other voice out of the American political process?  This is exactly what happened to the GOP under Bush.  They assumed that since they were elected again that they had the moral right to do what they were doing.  The country responded by electing Obama.  Sadly I think we reacted to rashly, yet what choice did we have?  I will admit that we did not have much, if any at all.  It is time to understand that we do not need one two political parties, but we are so far down the corporate political road I am not sure how we get back.  Still it should be abundantly clear that we can vote for whomever we want if we can support him/her.  Hoffman shows this and its becoming increasing clear to others

Over the course of the next few hours leading until the ballot casting in NY23, Progressives will isolate, divide, and turn you into something you are not.  Time and time again they fail to understand the nature of our rights and liberty, that somehow, as plain citizens we understand as a matter of fact.  One where our liberties are non-negotiable. Progressives would have you give up your rights for a group of citizens.

In other words Pelosi and her Progressives would have you enslaved for others to be free.
