The trouble with assuming one’s numerical majority is equal to a morale authority is that eventually a free thinking citizen gets tired of it. The Democrats in recent weeks are reeling from a number of shocking retirements due to their extremely unpopular position on issues or mind blowing scandals. The Democrats now face the loss of their superior numerical advantage. Looking just at the Senate, Democrats can now be certain they are not going to have 60 seats anymore come 2011. Aside from Dodd, Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO) is looking weak following Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-AR), Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV), Sen. Arlen Specter (D-PA), not to mention the open seats in Delaware and Illinois. While not all these will be lost, defeats are on the horizon. The Democrat 60 vote choke hold on the Senate will not remain. The race is equally in the air but the more seats one has to defend the weaker one’s position is. Previously the GOP had to worry but now it seems like the Democrats are in the same boat.

The governor races are equally as bleak with 37 total positions opening up and already Democrats are falling away as in Michigan with Lt Gov Cherry bowing out of the race leaving it any one’s game.

To add insult to injury, citizens identifying themselves as Democrat are falling away as shown in a recent Gallup poll:

In the first quarter of 2009, coincident with the beginning of the Obama administration, Democrats enjoyed one of the largest advantages for either party since 1991, 13 percentage points (51.7% of Americans identified as Democrats or leaned Democratic, versus 38.7% who identified as or leaned Republican). In each subsequent quarter, the percentage of Democratic supporters declined, and by the fourth quarter, the Democratic advantage had shrunk to 5 points (47.2% to 42.2%). “The increase in overall GOP support is owing to an increase in the percentage of Republican-leaning independents, from 11% in the first quarter to 15% in the third and fourth quarters.” Gallup

While its a small victory to regain a measure of a democratic to the system the trick be to repeal the obtrusive and overbearing powers of the government. For liberty minded citizens the battle has only begun.
