Illinois-based Marathon Pundit wonders whether the strong rebuke of President Obama deliverered by voters in New Jersey and Virginia will have an effect on the U.S. Senate candidacy of Illinois State Senator Kirk Dillard (R).

Dillard co-sponsored ethics legislation with Obama in the Illnois Senate. After working with Obama on the legislation, Dillard made a statement in praise of Obama that was later used in a campaign ad.

But some say Dillard has been slow to distance himself from the President, and while touting his own ability to work with Illinois Democrats. With the mood of Republican voters likely to remain against cooperating with Obama’s policies, Dillard may have a difficult time advancing in the primary or motivating the Republican base in the 2010 general election.

Dillard and several others, including conservative Pat Hughes (R-Hinsdale) and liberal Congressman Mark Kirk (IL-10), will run in the February 2, 2010 primary. The election is to fill the seat being vacated by Sen. Roland Burris (D), who declined to seek reelection.
