One day after the surprise announcement that General Motors would not be selling off its European made Opel brand, the company is poised to announce the cutting of up to 10,000 jobs from the division.
The dual announcements have angered German labor leaders and the German government. Union leaders in Germany have announced walkout plans, while the German government is demanding that GM repay more than $2.2 billion in loans.
From the BBC
German trade unions now fear two of the four Opel factories in the country could close under the GM plan, whereas under the Magna agreement they had been given a guarantee that all four factories would have been kept going.
Politicians and unions in Germany had favoured a sale to Magna as the best way to save German jobs, as it included a guarantee that no German factory would be closed.
